AUDIO REVIEW: You Spin Me by Karen Grey

The audiobook YOU SPIN ME, (BOSTON CLASSICS #3) a nostalgic romantic comedy by Karen Grey is NOW LIVE!

Narrated by Vanessa Edwin and Eric Michael Summerer

Some scars go further than skin deep…

1988 doesn’t end well for Jessica Abraham. In just one week she turns thirty, loses her day job, and loses the role of Ophelia to a younger actress. Rallying, she goes after a part at a theater outside of the city, but the director’s plan to hide her beauty behind hair, makeup and wardrobe from Cosmo’s “Don't” column shakes her confidence to the core.

For the first time in her acting career, she won’t be able to rely on her carefully managed physical charms. Only her craft will count.

On a snowy night early  in January 1989, a woman calls into DJ Callihan Alonso’s alt-rock radio show at the end of her commute. He asks her to call back the next night, and the next, just so he'll know she’s home safe. There's something about her voice that has him wanting more, but the longer they talk, the closer she gets. Compromising each and every wall he's built around his heart.

If two lonely people fall in love over late-night phone calls, will meeting face-to-face make them, or break them?

In this heart-rending but happy-ending retro romcom, it may be the end of a decade, but it’s the beginning of a love story.

REVIEW

RATING: ★★★★

You Spin Me is book #3 is Karen Grey's Boston Classics Series. It is funny, emotional, sweet and beautiful. The audiobook narrated by Eric Michael Summerer and Vanessa Edwin was fantastic! The sound effects at the beginning of each chapter I loved. The narrators are masters of their craft and delivered a performance that kept me engaged and connected to the story and unable to stop listening from beginning to end.

As with every book in this series, Karen Grey creates the most unique characters. I love the way Jess and Cal 'meet' initially. Their relationship is formed on an emotional level first rather than physical which I found unique. Cal is a DJ/radio host, and Jess is an actress and dancer teacher. The development of their relationship was sweet I couldn't get enough of their flirty banter during their late night talks. Both Jess and Cal are working through insecurities regarding their physical appearance. Together and individually the support they offer each other is open and honest. It made their connection that much stronger. I loved the slow burn of their romance. They do not rush it and that made it all the more special when they come together. I love the way Karen writes in the 1980s era. It is definitely nostalgic with perfect little touches that brings me right back to my childhood.

Overall I really adored this story. It is a fun, entertaining, heartfelt and emotional. I highly recommend it!

REVIEW: No Rep by Lani Lynn Vale

NO REP, MADD CROSSFIT BOOK #1 BY LANI LYNN VALE IS NOW LIVE!

BLURB

Taos was tired.

Tired of everything that came with living. Not to the point where he was suicidal or anything, but tired enough that he just didn’t give a crap anymore.

He’d seen all the ugliness this world had to offer due to his job as a police officer for way too many damn years of his less than stellar life. After finding a way to sustain his spending habits that didn’t include having criminals point guns at his face, he quits without a backward glance.

Only, he just can’t step away from old habits. Old habits that have to do with a beautiful young woman who makes his heart feel like it isn’t nearly as broken as it is.

Fran has experienced more than her fair share of crap. After an attack that nearly took her life, she stays hidden in her house, fearful that stepping out of her comfort zone will be the final nail in her coffin.

Then, her sister forces her to face her fears, and she joins Madd CrossFit.
There, she meets the man who saved her life a year ago and realizes rather quickly that he doesn’t even realize who he is to her.

He’s everything she ever thought a man should be and wants nothing to do with her.

Maybe, she’ll have to give him a reason to look her way.

And damned if she doesn’t find a way to do it.

She didn’t plan on nearly getting killed for that to happen, though. At least, not again.

REVIEW

Rating: ★★★★★

No Rep is book #1 in Lani Lynn Vale’s new Madd CrossFit Series. The book features Taos Brady and Fran Pope. Taos is a CrossFit gym owner, mystery author and ex-cop. Fran is a tough, resilient, strong quirky woman recovering from a horrific attack. Fran has become a bit of a recluse since her attack, preferring the safety of her home to going out in the world. Her sister trying to help her regain her life convinces her to get out and try a CrossFit class. What she doesn’t expect to find is this intense attraction to the instructor, Taos Brady who is also the man that saved her from her attack. Their attraction and chemistry burned off the pages, and although a bit of a slow burn all the build up and mystery surrounding them made this story impossible to put down from beginning to end. I love the dynamics of these characters and the development of their relationship/romance. Taos built Fran up in his love and protectiveness and Fran was the woman he never knew he needed in his life. This was a fantastic start to the series! I love how LLV laid the ground work for the next two books in the series and cannot wait to read them next.

REVIEW: Southern Secrets by Natasha Madison

Release Date: July 27

Some secrets have a way of coming back and haunting us, no matter how much we try to bury them.

Amelia
Never make the same mistake twice is my motto.
After being left in the dust of an old pickup truck, I promised that I would take care of myself
and never trust another man with a sexy smirk and cowboy boots.
Then he showed up, and he’s everywhere I turn. He's at the barn, he's at the bar, and now, he's my roommate.
He makes me want things I shouldn’t

Asher
I grew up in foster care, and on my eighteenth birthday, I was set free.
I spent years coasting from town to town.
Staying wasn’t a part of my plan and neither was love, especially with someone off limits.
This was all supposed to be temporary.
I’m just hoping my secret doesn’t destroy the only family I’ve ever known.

Buried secrets are never buried for long.

REVIEW

Rating:

Wow! I am still reeling from the events that unfold in Southern Secrets! This is book #7 in Natasha Madison's Southern series and is Amelia and Asher's story. Right from chapter one I was completely captitvated by this story! I easily fell for the characters and everything going on in their lives. With every chapter I needed more as the secrets and suspense unfolded.

Asher is new to town. He has been working on Amelia's families ranch for the past six months, and has been warmly welcomed into the family. He grew up in the foster care system and never knew what it was like to be accepted and loved by a family like Amelia's. Although his childhood is heartbreaking Asher is truly a wonderful man. Sweet, kind, caring, hardworking, reliable and protective.

Amelia is the daughter of Jacob and Kallie, who we met in Southern Chance. She is a strong beautiful, hardworking and independant woman. She was deceived in a past relationship and wasn't very trusting of men and therefore was hesitant on finding love again.

I loved Asher and Amelia together immediately. Their flirty banter, and chemistry was addictive and although Amelia was hesitant at first it quickly becomes hard to resist Asher's charm. I loved them together but knowing their were secrets lurking in the background it kept me on the edge in anticipation.
Natasha Madison is a wonderful story teller. I love her ability to write small town romance, with sweet heartfelt characters and suspense. I cannot wait for the next one!

AUDIO REVIEW: Waylaid by Sarina Bowen

Waylaid (True North, Book #8)
By Sarina Bowen
Release Date: July 20, 2021

It’s a tale as old as time: the bad boy meets the good girl. He makes a daring proposition. Then the boy gets a mysterious head injury and loses a year of his life…

The first time I meet Rickie, I don’t know what to make of him. The second time we meet, he doesn’t remember the six hours we spent together. Or standing me up afterward.

I’m not the same, either. I’ve got secrets. I’ve told lies. Bad boys aren’t my type, anyway. Even the ones with troubled gray eyes.

But now we’re roommates. Cue the awkward moments in the hallway when he’s wearing only a towel and a smile. He’s determined to win me over, and his talented hands weaken my resolve.

It’s all fun and games until my past rears its ugly head and his secrets come to light, shaking our fragile connection, maybe even breaking it…

Note: this is Daphne Shipley's story. Contents include Vermonty ice cream flavors, nerdy awkwardness, tattoos, and a playboy grandpa.

Excerpt:

I read all the way to the highway exit, but I only get halfway through the first article. It’s dense and full of statistical analysis that’s over my head.

By the time Rickie rolls down the exit ramp, I feel the onset of a full-blown case of imposter syndrome. Dr. Drummond is expecting me to be sharp. What if they ask me to work on this type of analysis, and I can’t do it?

“I see the ice cream place,” Rickie says. “But there’s no entrance back onto the highway. What the hell?”

“Doesn’t matter,” I mumble. “It’s three miles down a side road to exit 6.” I close the journal with a sigh. I feel so panicky right now. I’ve always tried to be the smartest girl in the room. But it’s all an act. I’m obviously the worst kind of dunce—the kind that can’t see her own mistakes until it’s way too late. (See: the last twelve months of my life.)

Is it normal to have a midlife crisis right before your twenty-first birthday?

Rickie rolls into the gravel parking lot of the Dreamy Creemee and puts the truck in a shady spot. He rolls down the windows before killing the engine. It’s getting toward dinner hour, so there aren’t many people here. Just a couple of moms pushing toddlers on the swing set.

And I’m quietly having a panic attack in the passenger seat.

I take a slow but shaky breath. Do I even want ice cream? Is there a flavor on that signboard that could take me out of my own head? I reach for the door handle, but Rickie stops me.

“Look," he says. "About that time we shared a ride home from Connecticut...”

“No,” I say forcefully. If he makes me relive that embarrassing experience, I might lose my cool. “Just forget it, okay? So what if you ghosted me?”

His eyes widen. But my rant is only picking up steam.

“None of that matters. I didn’t even blame you. And the only way I'm going to make it through this year is if I put Connecticut behind me, okay? Just leave it alone.”

My voice cracks on that last word, and I realize that I might actually cry. Which is a thing I never do. But Harkness College was my dream, and I blew it. My damn eyes get hot and my throat constricts.

“S-so just forget it," I squeak. “It's already in the past. It can just stay there.”

Rickie's gray eyes are soft now. And they're moving closer. To my utter surprise, he leans forward and presses a kiss to my lips.

So soft, my brain sputters.

“Shh,” he says against my lips. His kiss is warm and unhurried. Like a ray of sunshine when you’re shivering.

For once, my squirrel brain forgets to scurry. And I just let it happen. He kisses me again. It’s still gentle. His bright eyes measure me. I don’t know what he sees. But whatever it is, he decides he likes it.

Those soft lips brush and press. Again. And I'm only human. Rickie's surprisingly tender kiss has caught me at a vulnerable moment. I lean in, experimenting with the slide and pressure of his mouth against mine. A sizzle of heat flashes across my skin. It’s the strangest sensation—as if he’s transferred an ounce of that devil-may-care attitude across the steering column and right into my soul. I drink him in, lips parted. Ready for him to take it further.

But then it ends. Rickie sits back, his head cocked to the side, as if in deep contemplation.

I’m bereft. “Wh-what was that for?” I stammer.

I expect a smirk. But his expression remains soft. “You seemed a little freaked. So I brought you to an ice cream place on a hot summer’s day. But that wasn’t enough, apparently. You needed even more distraction. So I gave it to you. And I’m good at that. A real specialist.”

Replying is impossible. All I can do is sit here and try to process that kiss. That lovely kiss.

He really has some nerve.

Review

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

Waylaid is book #8 in Sarina Bowen's True North Series. This book is pure perfection and is a must read for fans of this series. The complexities of these characters, the emotional journey they face together and individually was so beautifully written. Sarina Bowen’s writing in this story is phenomenal and I adored every moment with Rickie and Daphne. The audiobook narrated by Zachary Webber and Callie Dalton was fantastic. Zachary Webber has such a smooth, sultry voice that pulled me in from the opening chapter and Callie Dalton did such an amazing job with Daphne’s character as well.

Rickie is on the Shipley farm for the summer. He is immediately attracted and drawn to Daphne but little does he know they have a history due to his amnesia. In the beginning he comes across as a total playboy but as the story develops we learn that there is so much more to him. There is a raw beauty about Rickie that I just adored. He is working through some past trauma and the mystery of it all made my heart break for him as he tried to put together all the missing pieces.

Daphne is the youngest Shipley, and the twin sister of Dylan. She comes across a little bit prickly and misunderstood in previous books in the series so I wasn’t sure how to feel about her going into this but as the story unfolds we learn why and it is completely understandable. There is an honest vulnerability to Daphne and I found her character to be relatable and easy to connect with.

The more and more time Daphne and Rickie spent together the more I fell for them. I adored their every interaction. Their chemistry is undeniable and strong. The way they support one another as they worked through their pasts was truly special.

Any time I pick up a book in the Truth North world I adore spending time with The Shipley’s. They are such a fun family and in Waylaid I especially loved Grandpa Shipley and all his quirkiness. The things that come out of that man’s mouth had me snorting in laughter quite a few times and I just loved it.

This book is most definitely one of my top favourites of the series and highly recommend it!

Book Blurb:

Jett Olsson isn’t looking for anything serious and she’s not looking for anything at all, so why does it seem so hard to keep it professional? I love my life—the thrill of being on the ice as part of the Arizona Vengeance, the rush of winning, the adoration of the fans. And if that adoration means I don’t have to spend the night alone, well even better. I’m content being single and always ready to mingle. But the day Emory Holland walks into a Vengeance team meeting my attention is caught like never before. I can tell right away she’s full of smarts and sass, and the fact that she’s hot as hell sure doesn’t hurt either. She immediately shuts down my advances, so I opt for the road less traveled—straight to the friend zone. My approach works like a charm, and when she invites me into her bed for a no-strings, friends-with-benefits arrangement, I vow to give her everything I have. She’s been hurt before, and if I’m able to help her heal while giving her a spectacularly satisfying time *pats self on back*, then I’ll be happy. Or at least that’s the lie I keep telling myself as the time ticks down on the final buzzer of our “relationship”. Now the real question is, can I score the winning goal in a game neither of us realized we were playing?

REVIEW

4 stars!

Sawyer Bennett writes the BEST hockey romance. We are now on book #10 in The Arizona Vengeance series and each book gets better and better.

Jett is a right winger for the Arizona Vengeance. He is focused and driven by all things hockey. He is charming and confident and the moment he meets Emory, the new VP of Digital Marketing for the team he is intrigued by her and is relentless in his pursuit of her and getting her to agree to a date with him.

Emory is a hard working, single mom. She is protective of her daughter and sister and she is guarded when it comes to matters of the heart due to a tumultuous relationship with her ex-husband.

I really enjoyed the progression of Jett and Emory’s relationship. Once Jett learns of all Emory has going on at home, they agree to a casual relationship with no commitment. Their chemistry is undeniable and the more time they spend time together the more their hearts become invested.

I cannot wait to find out which hockey players book is next. I’m eager for Baden and Riggs’ stories. I’m so invested in this series, the team, the players and their significant others. My only complaint was the ending felt abrupt and left me wanting more. Having said that I am sure we will see them again in future books in the series.

Kissing the Cowboy

Kissing the Cowboy is now available on all retailers!

After drinking a bottle of wine, Harper tells her business rival that she recently got engaged. Once the hangover wears off, Harper realizes she now needs a fake fiancรฉ or to admit she lied. Wanting to avoid the backlash, she asks her childhood best friend for a favor.

Ethan Bishop will do anything for Harper, even if it’s crazy and means risking his heart. Pretending to be engaged to the woman he’s always loved proves to be difficult—especially when repressed feelings bubble to the surface.

It’s hard to know what’s real or fake when their private moments turn intimate. When they cross the line and fall between the sheets, the truth is undeniable.

Just as they feared, their friendship’s no longer the same. However, one thing’s certain—there’s no going back now.

REVIEW

4 stars!

Kissing the Cowboy is book #5 in Kennedy Fox's Circle B Ranch Series. We are back on the Ranch with the Bishops and this time we have Ethan Bishop (son of Emily and Evan from Needing Him) and his best friend Harper's story. This is an adorable friends to lovers/fake engagement storyline. I loved this story so much. The love both Ethan and Harper had for another was evident from the very beginning. Both afraid the other didn't reciprocate their feelings and afraid to tell the other how they felt. Harper is beautiful and successful. She has a small business creating lotions, and soaps from goats milk. Her business is successful because she puts so much time and attention into the details. After a night of a few too many glasses of wine, she ends up telling her business rival she is engaged and of course Ethan being the amazing guy he is agrees to play along. Ethan is the full package. Huge heart, protective, loyal, loving and hard working. While Ethan and Harper try really hard at first to fight their feelings, it becomes impossible. They two have incredible chemistry and you cannot help route for their HEA. I can never get enough of the Bishop family and the Circle B Ranch and look forward to Kenzie and Grayson's story next, the way these two have been circling each other has me eager for their story!
