REVIEW: Rifts & Refrains by Devney Perry

Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry is now live!

From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note's infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band's chart-toppings hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it's to her pulse.
Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.
When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she's paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn't able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future.
If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.

Excerpt

She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.

“Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.”

She might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

“Thanks,” I said, watching as she walked away.

Fuck me.

When had I never loved that woman?

Maybe that kiss had woken me up. Maybe it had made me realize how goddamn lonely I’d been without her. I had Colin, but there was a corner of my heart that would always belong to Quinn.

I should have followed her nine years ago.

Because now it was too late.

4-STAR REVIEW

Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry is book #2 in the Hush Note Series and follows the band’s female drummer, Quinn Montgomery and her former love, Graham Hayes. A death in Quinn’s family brings Quinn back to her hometown Bozeman, Montana where she reunites with family that she has been estranged from and Graham, her childhood sweet heart.

I have to admit going into this I wasn’t a huge fan of Quinn after the antics she pulled in Lies and Lullabies but let me tell you she 100% redeems herself!

I was so invested in Quinn’s story with her family. She is estranged from them never feeling  supported for going after her dreams of making it as a drummer in a rock band. There was so much to work through and unpack but there was so much beauty in Quinn’s reunion with her family. It wasn’t easy at times but all they have overcome together was so sweet, emotional and endearing.

Graham has spent 9 years repairing his heart after Quinn shattered it by leaving him to pursue her dream. He is still not over the hurt she caused him. He is now a single dad and devoted father to his son, Colin. 7 year old Colin, my goodness he stole the show. So adorable and such a wonderful young boy! He captured my heart.

The chemistry between Quinn and Graham is slow burn but when they connected there was SO MUCH chemistry and fire between them.

Devney Perry is one talented writer. She has written an incredible story of peace, hope and second chances. She brings all the feels in this one! Beautiful scenery, descriptive scenes and an emotional connection between the main characters that I just couldn’t get enough of.

If you love small towns and second chances this book is for you but prepare yourself! Pick this one up and stop everything you are doing because you won’t want to put it down from beginning to end.

I love this series. Three different authors. One band. All the feels! I love the connection and comrade between band members. They are a family of their own and offer a support system to one another that I just adore.

Nixon’s story is up next, written by Rebecca Yarros and I do not know if my heart is ready after the glimpses we’ve seen of him in the first two books but either way I cannot wait.

Thank you for Valentine PR for provided an advanced reader copy in exchange of an honest review.
