REVIEW: Stone by Sawyer Bennett

Stone (Pittsburgh Titans, Book 2) Sawyer Bennett

Release Date: March 1, 2022

Synopsis:

Minor league player Stone Dumelin lost his younger brother when the Titans’ team plane went down. He never expected the phone call that followed.

After a shoulder injury put my NHL career on ice, I resigned myself to the fact I’d never see my way out of the minor league again. As my career faded, my estranged brother’s star shot into orbit as the first line left winger for the Pittsburgh Titans. But when the team’s plane crashed returning home one night, his light was snuffed out, and I was given the opportunity of a lifetime. Now I’m in Pittsburgh, playing for the Titans, and face-to-face with my dead brother’s ghost at every turn. His locker, his legacy, his persistent and annoyingly gorgeous attorney who won’t stop contacting me about his estate, even though I’ve demanded she leave me alone. Harlow Alston would be extremely appealing if she wasn’t so aggravating. Only…that’s a complete lie. She pushes all the right buttons for me, and as much as I want her to quit pestering me about Brooks’s estate, I find myself intrigued by the fiery redhead who can’t take no for an answer. And the more I learn about Harlow, the more I find she might be the key to understanding who Brooks really was, and who I want to be. I’ve got a second shot at a career I thought I’d lost and the opportunity to build something real with Harlow, but can I find strength to move forward or will my past dictate my future?

REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I love you, Stone. And I’ll give you a million chances to always make things right with me.”

Sawyer Bennett warned us that this series was going to be heavier with emotion but somehow my heart was still not prepared for this incredible story!

Stone is living in shadows, anger and pain after the loss of his brother after tragedy struck down the Titans team plane. Now he has been given the opportunity he’s been waiting for to play pro hockey again but it comes at the cost of feeling like he is replacing his brother, Brooks and he isn’t sure how to reconcile that. Prior to Brooks’ death he and Stone had a strained relationship. Mainly due to miscommunication and the manipulations of their father who is an awful human being for the rift he caused between them. He had no concern for his sons and was only concerned about money, greed and power.

Harlow, Brooks’ best friend has been appointed trustee of his estate and has been given the difficult task of trying to get through to Stone to hear out his brothers wishes. I adored her tenacity, fierce, independent strength. She owns her own law firm and despite growing up in a wealthy family she has always followed her own path and heart, unapologetically.

Harlow and Stone’s relationship is a slow build. The friendship they build first is beautiful and necessary for their story.  The pace and timing felt perfect for their journey. The more time they spend together the more invested I became in them. Harlow seems to always know when to give him the space he need while also being hugely supportive as Stone grapples with his emotions and discovering parts of his brother he knew nothing about.  My heart shattered for him, as he grieved his brother and all I wanted to do was turn back the clock for him so he could go back in time and repair his relationship with his brother.

The Pittsburgh Titans hockey world Sawyer Bennett has created is my most favourite of all her hockey series. Even amongst a heartbreaking storyline she manages to create some of her most realistic, relatable characters and you cannot help but route for them as they heal, build new friendships within the team and find true love. There is something so beautiful about two people finding love after such tragedy and loss. It’s a unique connection and incredible storytelling.

I am loving the progression of the Titans team rebuilding and I cannot wait for Gage’s story next. I have loved the glimpses we’ve seen of him so far. He is a true leader in the group and cannot wait for more!
